English Des Champs III

Obituary of English Seals Des Champs III

English Seals DesChamps III, a truly remarkable man, in familiar grand style, went out with a bang on July 4th, 2021. English, a true Renaissance man, lived his life to its fullest. He was a loving husband, father, and friend to many. He was an engaging conversationalist with a delightful sense of humor who always had an encouraging word for others. English was born in Asheville, NC on July 12, 1929. He grew up in Sumpter, SC and attended the University of North Carolina and the University of Florida. After graduating from college, he served in the Korean War where he managed the removal of troops at the end of the war. When English returned home, he reconnected with the love of his life, Bette Jane Wilson from Bradenton, Florida. They married and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 28th. English started his career in real estate and then joined with Stuart Gregory to open DesChamps and Gregory in 1963. It was a wonderful partnership, and they remained close friends even after English’s retirement in 2008. He served in numerous leadership roles in the community including Christ Episcopal Church, The Kiwanis Club, The United Way, The Boys Club, and his proudest accomplishment, Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School. He and Bette were instrumental in starting the school in 1970 and have remained loyal supporters. Their love for Christ Church and the music department inspired their donation of the Letourneau Organ for future generations to enjoy. English also loved The University of Florida Gators. He was involved with Gator Boosters and the Athletic Education Fund. Until recently, they attended many sporting events. When English retired from DesChamps and Gregory, Bette and English spent part of the year at their beloved home in Highlands, North Carolina where they built a house overlooking the 17th fairway at Highlands Country Club. He enjoyed spending his time playing golf, cards with friends, entertaining, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. They took many trips around the world, and Bette will treasure those memories. English was preceded in death by his son, English DesChamps IV. He is survived by his loving wife Bette Jane and daughter Seale, and his beloved dog Maudie. There will be a memorial service for English in the Fall at Christ Episcopal Church.
